Born on 1 February 1914 in Sialkot, Avtar Kishan Hangal was a freedom fighter before entering films. In his early days, he worked as a tailor but was also active in India's freedom struggle between 1929 and 1947. He had to spend three years in Karachi jail. Upon his release, he came to India.

He acted in many plays in Indian theatres from 1949 to 1965. When he was 52 years old, he started his film career in 1966 with Basu Bhattacharya's film 'Teesri Kasam'. A.K. A.K. Hangal acted in 225 films in his four-decade long film career. Even after growing up, his passion for acting in films remained intact. President Abdul Kalam honored A.K. Hangal with the Padma Bhushan award in 2006. He said goodbye to this world on 26 August 2012.
