Mumbai: Many surrounding heritage structures will be destroyed in the name of Mumbai Devi Beautification Project. There is a plan to build a 17-storey parking building right behind the temple. The opposition has opposed the Mumbai Devi Corridor project saying that it will reduce the beauty and grandeur of the temple.
It is believed that Mumbai is named after Mumba Devi. Now the state government has opened the area around this temple located in a very dense area of the city and a beautification project of Rs 220 crore has been announced for the construction of Mumbai Devi Corridor on the basis of Kashi Corridor. The government has announced that redevelopment and beautification will be done in about nine thousand square meters.
However, the Shiv Sena UBT has raised objections to this corridor. After a meeting with local citizens in the temple area, leaders including Aditya Thackeray said that the project is actually for the benefit of the alleged contractors of the government.
The project does not consider the shops of temple trusts and families that have been there for 150-200 years. The government wants to drive out local shopkeepers and bulldoze their alleys on heritage-owned shops and old buildings.
A plot behind the temple is reserved for a school. A 17-storey parking building will be built in its place. This will fade the beauty and grandeur of the temple.
Local residents and shopkeepers have demanded immediate removal of the dumping yard behind the temple, dismantling the car parking facility and constructing a temple hall in its place and considering the interests of the devotees.
Highlighting these issues, a local resident said, the original beauty of Mumbadevi, including a small pond once used by devotees, has been lost.
