News India Live, Digital Desk: Whenever we talk about Ramayana, the scene of ‘Lanka Dahan’ is the most hair-raising one. We all have heard and seen that Ravana’s ego set fire to Hanuman ji’s tail and in return Bajrangbali burnt the entire golden city to ashes. This is true, but not the whole truth!
If we go deeper into the mythology, we come to know that the story of the burning of Lanka had been written even before the birth of Hanuman ji. Yes, there is a big secret hidden behind the burning of golden Lanka which is directly connected to Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. Come, let us tell you that interesting story.
It starts with a dream…
According to the stories, once Mother Parvati felt that Lord Shiva is a recluse, he has no problem in living in the mountains and crematorium, but being a householder, he needs a ‘home’ of his own. On the insistence of Mother Parvati, Lord Shiva ordered Devshilpi Vishwakarma. Vishwakarma ji used all his art and built a palace which was completely made of gold. It was so amazing that all three worlds were astonished by its brightness. This was – ‘Golden Lanka’.
Ravana’s evil eye and ‘house entry’
When the palace was ready, the greatest scholar and devotee of Shiva was called for the housewarming puja. It was none other than Lankapati Ravana (who was the demon king at that time). Ravana performed the puja with full rituals. But Ravana was shaken after seeing that golden palace. He became greedy and said, “Bholenath is a recluse who loves ashes, what will he do in this golden palace? This palace should be owned by a king like me.”
The gift that changed everything
After the puja was over, Lord Shiva was pleased and asked, “Ask Ravana, what do you want in Dakshina?” So the cunning Ravana immediately said – “Lord, please give me this golden Lanka as Dakshina.”
Mahadev was a great donor, he smiled and said, “Amen!” And silently went back to Kailash from there.
Mother Parvati’s anger and curse
It was easy for Lord Shiva, but Mother Parvati felt very bad about this betrayal. His dream house, which he had built with so much love, was taken away by Ravana by deceit.
Enraged, Mother Parvati cursed Ravana, “Ravana! Remember, one day this palace will burn to ashes with the help of the golden palace with which you have cheated your beloved.”
What happened after that?
It is said that words never die. Years later, the 11th Rudra incarnation of Lord Shiva i.e. Hanuman Reached Lanka. And through his tail he made the same curse of Mother Parvati come true.
So technically the fire was started by Hanuman ji, but that ‘flame’ was actually the anger of Mother Parvati which was burning for years.
Ramayana teaches us that anything taken by cheating or deceit never brings happiness, in the end it remains ashes, even if it is a golden Lanka.
