It is also called Dev Diwali or Tripurari Purnima. According to mythology, on this day Lord Shiva killed the demon named Tripurasura and freed the gods from his terror. To celebrate this victory, the gods had lit lamps in heaven. It is believed that since then every year on this day the gods descend on the ghats of Kashi (Varanasi) and celebrate Diwali.

This time is considered best for worship and donating lamps. This year, many auspicious yogas like Sarvartha Siddhi, Siddhi and Shiv Vas are also being formed on Dev Diwali, which further increases the importance of this day.
How to do simple worship of Mahadev at home?
Dev Diwali is mainly worshiped in the evening during Pradosh Kaal. Here is the simple method of worship:
- Bathing and Hygiene: On this day, wake up early in the morning and take bath. If possible, take bath in a holy river, or take bath at home by mixing Ganga water in water.
- Preparation of puja place: Clean the place of worship and sprinkle Ganga water. Now spread a clean cloth on a stool and install the idol or picture of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi.
- Resolution of worship: Take a pledge to worship with water in your hand and then light a ghee lamp.
- Worship of Lord Shiva: Anoint Lord Shiva with Ganga water, milk and Panchamrit. After this, offer them Belpatra, flowers, Dhatura and sandalwood.
- Vishnu-Lakshmi worship: Offer yellow flowers and Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu and offer lotus flowers or red flowers to Goddess Lakshmi.
- Mantra chanting: during puja “Om Namah Shivay” And “Om Namo Bhagwate Rudray Namah” Keep chanting the mantra.
- Deepdan: After the puja, light a lamp near the main entrance of the house, courtyard, terrace and Tulsi plant. Donating a lamp on the banks of a river or pond is considered very auspicious.
- Aarti and Prasad: In the end, perform aarti of all the gods and goddesses and distribute prasad by offering fruits and sweets.
Special mantra of lamp donation
Chanting this mantra while lighting a lamp in the evening brings happiness and prosperity in the house:
“Shubham Karoti Kalyanam Arogyaam Dhansampada. Shatrubuddhivinashaya Deepakay Namostute.”
