‘That film was 100% mistake’, Saif Ali Khan’s pain spilled over superhit Cocktail after 14 years, told why he did the work out of compulsion

Nawab of Bollywood and famous for his versatile acting, actor Saif Ali Khan is often known for his outspoken statements. Whether it is accepting the failure of his films or giving his honest opinion on any big project, Saif never talks in silence. Now the actor has made a shocking revelation about a film of his career which is still considered by the audience and critics as a cult modern-day classic and superhit romantic-drama. Almost 14 years have passed since the film ‘Cocktail’ was released in 2012, but now after so many years, Saif has admitted that being a part of this blockbuster project was 100 percent mistake of his career and he did this film only out of compulsion.

When the film ‘Cocktail’, directed by filmmaker Homi Adajania, was released in theatres, its songs and the chemistry of the characters created a stir at the box office. The trio of Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and newcomer Diana Penty was adored by the audience and the film proved to be a commercial blockbuster. However, Saif, who appeared smiling and bubbly on screen, was never completely comfortable with this project from within. The actor discussed this openly in a recent interview with Gulf News. Saif clearly said that he was not at all happy with his character in that film and if the circumstances had been different, he would never have accepted that role. According to him, as an actor he was struggling with a very regressive thinking at the level of script and character.

During the interview, Saif Ali Khan also revealed the main reason due to which he had to enter the project as a lead actor despite not wanting to. Saif told that his own production company ‘Illuminati Films’ was producing this cinematic project. He said that I played the role of Gautam only because we were producing it and somehow the project had to get off the ground. This was a mistake which could not have been avoided at that time. That was 100 percent a mistake and that script choice was a little backwards. However, he also added that from an audience’s point of view, it was a light-hearted, fun and entertaining film that made the audience laugh and cry, but as an actor, he was well aware that it was not a milestone role in his career.

Even though the story of Cocktail was a triangular love story, the real life and soul of the film was the character ‘Veronica’ played by Deepika Padukone. Saif openly admitted that when he read the script for the first time, he realized that the brilliance and strength of the entire film revolved around Veronica. Saif said that I did not do this film because of my role, but only so that the film could be made somehow and the production work would not stop. You work in the industry for many different reasons, not always artistic satisfaction. I knew from the beginning that the role of Veronica was the most interesting, deep and exciting, whereas my character was quite ordinary. But there are some tasks which you have to do to take the production and project forward.

Even though today Saif Ali Khan is calling this film his mistake, but the name of Cocktail is very strongly recorded in the history of pop-culture and Bollywood of the year 2012. Songs like ‘Angrezi Beat’ and ‘Daru Desi’ with Pritam’s music, Irshad Kamil’s lyrics and Yo Yo Honey Singh’s rap had forced the youth to dance. In the film, Saif played the role of Gautam, a flirt and carefree boy who lives in a live-in relationship with the modern-minded Veronica but eventually falls in love with the traditional-valued Meera (Diana Penty). Even at that time, some cine critics had raised questions regarding this conservative angle, and today, 14 years later, Saif Ali Khan himself admitted that this script was a bit conservative in thinking, which had molded the modern girl into the embodiment of sacrifice and the traditional girl into the mold of the perfect life partner.

Along with the analysis of old films, Saif Ali Khan is also in the center of headlines for his upcoming very exciting projects. These days the actor is busy in the vigorous promotion of his upcoming psychological thriller film ‘Haiwaan’. This film is being directed by veteran director Priyadarshan, who is returning after a long time with a dark and intense thriller. Saif Ali Khan plays a very challenging and emotional character in the film, where he will be seen playing the role of a blind person. The biggest USP of this film is that along with Saif, Bollywood’s Akshay Kumar will also be seen in the lead and powerful role. After a long time, this pair of Saif and Akshay will be seen together on the big screen. Let us tell you that the film ‘Haivaan’ is the official Hindi remake of Malayalam cinema’s superhit suspense thriller film ‘Oppam’ released in 2016, for which there is a huge craze among the audience and trade analysts.
