Thane Crime Branch Deputy Commissioner Parag Maner on Tuesday started the investigation into the killing of Akshay Shinde, accused in the Badlapur rape case, in a police encounter. Today, the police handed over Akshay Shinde's body to Mumbai's JJ Hospital for post-mortem. The forensic team has examined the police van in which the encounter took place.
According to the police, on Monday, while being taken from Taloja jail to Badlapur, Akshay Shinde suddenly snatched the service revolver of the police and started firing. Akshay Shinde was injured by the bullet fired in self-defense by the policeman present in the van. After this, Akshay and the policeman were taken to Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa in an injured condition, but the doctors declared the accused Akshay Shinde dead, while the treatment of the injured policeman is going on.
After this incident, Maharashtra Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis had ordered an investigation into the matter. Thane Crime Branch Deputy Commissioner of Police Parag Maner inspected the police van today and recovered four bullet shells. Blood samples have also been taken from the van. An in-depth investigation into the matter is underway.
Akshay's mother said that her son is innocent and he was killed in an encounter to save the main accused. She will not accept her son's body. However, MNS chief Raj Thackeray's wife Sharmila Thackeray has announced a reward of Rs 51,000 to the police personnel who carried out the encounter. Also, in many areas of Mumbai and Badlapur, people distributed sweets in support of the encounter and supported the police.
