A situation of tension has once again arisen on the border of Assam and Meghalaya. The situation in Shillong has worsened following the recent violence during a bike rally, in protest against which taxi drivers from Guwahati blocked National Highway-27 (NH-27) has been heavily blocked. In response to the stopping of vehicles towards Assam, the transport organizations of Meghalaya (AKMTTA) have also given a sharp reaction. The organizations have banned the movement of vehicles with Assam number near Umiam (Barapani). Besides this, another organization (FKJGP) has set up a blockade at Burnihat and stopped all types of vehicles entering Meghalaya from Assam. This ‘tit for tat’ action has made the situation on the border more serious.

Due to this border dispute and blockade, common citizens and tourists are facing huge problems. Narrating his plight, a stranded tourist said that he was going to the hospital for the treatment of his ailing father, but due to the vehicle being stopped on the way, he was facing a lot of trouble.

This entire controversy is related to the movement being run by Khasi Students Union in Shillong for its 5-point demands. The union has been pressurizing the government to immediately implement the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), reform the recruitment process of the Public Service Commission, make stringent rules for external migrant workers and other local issues, which has now turned into a face-to-face confrontation on the road between the two states.
