News India Live, Digital Desk : Supreme Court of India : The doors of the courts are not only for the rich and powerful, but the first right to justice belongs to the last person standing at the lowest rung of the society.” – This is the powerful and inspiring message Justice Surya Kant, who is going to be the next Chief Justice of India (CJI), has given to the whole world from the land of Sri Lanka.

While addressing an international legal conference held in Colombo, Justice Surya Kant presented before the world his thinking and vision of justice, which can decide the direction of the Indian judiciary in the times to come. His speech is not just a formal address, but a new ray of hope for crores of poor, deprived and weak people.

“The pyramid needs to be turned over.”

Justice Surya Kant challenged the traditional thinking of the justice system and said that we have to invert the pyramid of justice.

  • What did he say?: “Our traditional legal systems are often like a pyramid, where those with resources easily rise to the top, while the poor and vulnerable continue to struggle at the bottom. We need to reverse this pyramid. Our priority must be that justice reaches the last person who needs it most.”
  • Quote from Gandhiji: Referring to Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of ‘Antyodaya’, he said that no policy or law is successful unless its benefits reach the poorest and most vulnerable of the society. The same principle applies to the judicial system as well.

Technology will become the weapon of the poor

The future CJI of India also emphasized that technology can play a revolutionary role in making justice cheaper, accessible and faster.

  • E-Courts and Virtual Hearing: He said that in India, e-courts and hearing through video conferencing have made it possible for people living in remote villages to reach out to the Supreme Court.
  • Use of AI: Justice Surya Kant said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used in legal research and case management, which will reduce the burden on lawyers and they will be able to pay more attention to the cases of the poor.

Will take over the post of CJI in November 2025

Justice Surya Kant, known for his candor and humanitarian approach, will take over as the 52nd Chief Justice of India in November 2025. Even before becoming CJI, his progressive and inclusive thinking about justice on the international stage indicates that under his leadership, the focus of the Indian judiciary is going to be on the ‘common man’ and the ‘last man’.

His speech is not just a promise, but a prelude to a new and golden chapter of the Indian justice system.
