The Union Health Ministry gave approval to start this treatment on Friday (06 September). Let us tell you that the central government has set a target of 2025 to eradicate this disease completely.

This is how the treatment will be

According to the information, the new TB treatment BPALM is a combination of four drugs bedaquiline, pretomanid, linezolid and moxifloxacin. It has been claimed that this drug has proven to be safer, more effective and better than the previous MDR-TB treatment regimen. Let us tell you that traditional MDR-TB has to be treated for 20 months and there is a risk of serious side effects. It is believed that this step can be very important in achieving the national goal of eliminating TB from the country.

What has changed in medicine?

Let us tell you that the new anti-TB drug Pretomanid has been added in combination with Bedaquiline and Linezolid (with or without Moxifloxacin). Pretomanid is already approved and licensed by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) in India. After getting approval from the Ministry of Health to start treatment, 75,000 drug resistant TB patients in the country will get its benefit. Patients will take less time to recover. Apart from this, the cost of medicine will also be reduced.

According to information received from the Ministry of Health, the Department of Health and Family Welfare, in consultation with the Department of Health Research, has ensured the approval of the new TB treatment, which has been thoroughly reviewed by expert experts from across the country. The Department of Health and Family Welfare has also conducted a health technology assessment through the Department of Health Research to ensure that this MDR-TB treatment option is safe and cost-effective.
