Army was the first to be alerted about Pakistan’s infiltration in Kargil

Tashi Namgyal died in Garkhon, Aryan Valley, Ladakh. In early May 1999, Tashi Namgyal reached the Batalik mountain range in search of his missing yak. Here he saw some people in Pathani dress digging bunkers, who were Pakistani soldiers in civil dress. Understanding the seriousness of the situation, he immediately informed the Indian Army.

Important role in Kargil war

Tashi Namgyal’s timely briefing played a crucial role in shaping India’s military response. In the Kargil War fought between 3 May and 26 July 1999, Indian troops immediately mobilized and blocked the Srinagar-Leh highway, foiling Pakistan’s covert mission. Tashi Namgyal’s alertness played an important role in India’s victory in this war. The Indian Army honored Tashi as a brave and patriotic shepherd for his role in the Kargil War.
