An alleged firing incident that took place in the early hours of August 15, 2026 in the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary located in Hanur taluk of Chamarajanagar district, bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, has created huge political and social tension between the two states. Three people of Tamil origin—Anthony Sami, John Rose Peter and Kumar—died on the spot, while a fourth person, Mahima Das, was seriously injured in the firing, allegedly by Karnataka Forest Department personnel.
The Karnataka Forest Department and the local police administration claimed that their anti-poaching team was on patrol when they encountered some suspects who had entered the forest with the intention of poaching. The Forest Department alleges that the suspects had illegal weapons and deer meat and the alleged encounter between the two parties and the bullets fired in self-defence resulted in the death of all three.
