T20 World Cup: Afghanistan set a target of 116 runs for Bangladesh

Kingstown, June 25 (HS). Rishad Hussain took three wickets as Bangladesh restricted Afghanistan to 115 for 5 in 20 overs in the Super Eight match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Arnos Vale Ground on Tuesday.

After winning the toss, Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan decided to bat first. However, their decision did not go in their favour and they struggled to add runs to the scoreboard.

Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (43 off 55 balls, 3 fours and 1 six) and Ibrahim Zadran (18 off 29 balls, 1 four) gave Afghanistan a great start by putting on a 59-run partnership. Rishad Hussain got his first breakthrough in the match by dismissing Zadran in the 11th over. Azmatullah Umarzai (10 off 12 balls) tried his best to contribute in the game but failed to make a mark after he was dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman in the 16th over. Even though Bangladesh failed to take quick wickets, they were successful in curbing Afghanistan's run rate.

Gurbaz's innings ended on the first ball of the 17th over when Rishad Hussain took his wicket. The Afghan opener missed out on scoring a half-century by just seven runs. After this, Gulbadin Naib (4 runs off 3 balls, 1 four) and Mohammad Nabi (1 run off 5 balls) could not do much and returned to the pavilion in quick succession.

In the end, captain Rashid Khan (19* off 10 balls, 3 sixes) and Karim Janat (7 off 6 balls, 1 four) stood firm at the crease and took Afghanistan to 115 for 5 at the end of 20 overs.

For Bangladesh, Rishad Hussain took three wickets and conceded 26 runs in his four-over spell. Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed also took one wicket each.
