The Supreme Court on Monday issued an interim order saying that Carnatic singer T.M. Krishna got M.S. Not to be recognized as a recipient of Subbulakshmi Award at present. This order was given by Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice S.V.N. Bhatti’s bench heard M.S. While hearing the petition of Subbulakshmi’s grandson V. Srinivasan. The petition alleged that Krishna had made derogatory comments against the late legendary singer.
Supreme Court’s comment
The bench said, “Among music lovers M.S. The prestige of Subbulakshmi is supreme. She was a great singer, and despite her demise (December 2004), her melodious voice still inspires and excites her fans.”
The Supreme Court clarified that since the awards have already been given, as an interim measure T.M. Krishna will not be recognized as the winner of the award.
Madras High Court’s prior order
Earlier, Madras High Court Justice G. Jayachandran, while hearing the petition of V. Srinivasan on November 19, T.M. Krishna got M.S. Giving Subbulakshmi Award was banned. However, on December 13, Madras High Court Justice S.S. The bench of Justice Sundar and Justice P. Dhanbal had removed this ban.
The High Court had said that while accepting the appeal made against the order of November 19, there is no obstacle in giving the award to Krishna.
The matter reached the Supreme Court
V. Srinivasan challenged the decision of Madras High Court in the Supreme Court. During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General N. Venkatraman argued that this case is not ordinary. He said that T.M. Krishna promoted M.S. through social media and articles. Made objectionable and derogatory comments against Subbulakshmi.
On this the Supreme Court T.M. Issued notice to Krishna, Sangeet Academy, The Hindu and THG Publishing Pvt Ltd and directed them to file their reply within four weeks.
Srinivasan’s allegations
Srinivasan alleged in his suit that T.M. Krishna’s comments inspired his grandmother M.S. Subbulakshmi’s image has been damaged. He said that Krishna’s rhetoric is derogatory and venomous, hence he should not be given this award.
