Zurich, August 19 (HS). After a decade as Switzerland's No. 1 goalkeeper, Yann Sommer retired from the national team on Monday at the age of 35 to focus on playing for Inter Milan.
Sommer's decision, announced by the Swiss Football Federation, is likely to see Borussia Dortmund's Gregor Kobel move forward as first-choice keeper.
Since making his debut in 2012, Sommer has appeared in three World Cups and three European Championships with Switzerland.
He last played for the national team in last month’s Euro 2024 quarter-final against Germany, a 1-1 draw after which England won in a penalty shootout.
Sommer's finest moment for the national team was saving Kylian Mbappe's penalty to secure a shootout win against France after a 3-3 draw in the round of 16 at Euro 2020.
Sommer helped Inter win Serie A in his first season in Italy, and also won league titles four times with Bayern Munich in Germany and with Basel in Switzerland.
Switzerland next play Denmark and Euro 2024 champions Spain in the top-tier group of the UEFA Nations League on September 5 and 8.
