Mumbai: In yet another hit and run case in Maharashtra, a rickshaw driver was pushed to death in his sleep after being hit by an SUV on Mumbai's Versova beach while his friend was seriously injured. Two friends who lived nearby were sleeping on the beach to get relief from the heat when a horrific incident took place.
Instead of helping him, the accused driver and two others ran away. But the police caught him from Panchvati in Nashik. The court gave him five days of police custody.
An official from Versova police station said that rickshaw driver Ganesh Yadav and his friend Bablu Srivastava lived in Sagar Kutir Residents Association slum area near Versova beach. They went to sleep on the beach as the room was feeling hot. In the morning, both of them were sleeping on the mat when the SUV driver hit them. Then the SUV driver and another passenger ran away instead of helping them.
A local resident had recorded the number of the SUV. It is also being said that with the help of locals, Yadav and Srivastava were taken to the hospital, where Yadav was declared dead. Srivastava was admitted for treatment.
During investigation, the police found that the SUV was registered in the name of Satish S of Nagpur. After a thorough investigation, the police picked up the driver Nikhil Jawale (age 34) and his friend Shubham Dongre (age 33) from Igatpuri in Nashik. The SUV driver Nikhil is a resident of Nagpur and Shubham is a resident of Navi Mumbai. Accused Nikhil had come to meet his friend Shubham. The SUV was brought from Nagpur. After staying in Lonavala, they came to Mumbai. Taking advantage of the darkness of the night, he drove the car on the middle of the road and the accident happened.
The police have taken blood samples of both the accused. Both have been sent for forensic examination to check whether they were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. An FIR has been registered against both of them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The police presented both of them in the local court. The court gave him five days of police custody.
