The speculations about Shreyas Iyer after his injury in Sydney seem to be coming true. Shreyas Iyer is less likely to play in the ODI series against South Africa. The ODI series between India and South Africa is to start from November 30. However, according to reports, Shreyas is still recovering from his injury. Therefore, his chances of playing appear less.
October 2025 out of Sydney after injury
Shreyas Iyer was injured during the last ODI match played between India and Australia in Sydney in October this year. Iyer suffered a spleen injury, due to which his condition deteriorated and he had to be admitted to hospital. India’s ODI vice-captain is still recovering from the injury. The uncertainty over his playing in the ODI series against South Africa means that he will be out of cricket for some time yet.
Out of 2021 due to shoulder injury
However, this is not the first time in the last five years that Shreyas Iyer has taken a break from cricket. Iyer’s stay away from cricket began in 2021 when he suffered a shoulder injury during the match against England in Pune on March 23. Due to that injury, Iyer could not play half of the IPL 2021 season.
Out of 2023 due to back injury
He suffered a back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2023, due to which he stayed away from cricket. Iyer underwent back surgery in April 2023, after which he missed the entire IPL season.
This is why 2 times out in 2024
His back injury resurfaced in 2024 and he withdrew from the game midway through the Test series against England. To avoid a repeat of his 2024 back injury, he took a break from cricket in September 2025. This was the fourth time in five years that Iyer stayed away from cricket for one reason or the other.
