Surjit Singh Kohli always stood firmly in support of the workers | News India

'Kabir, when I came into this world, the world laughed and I cried.

We did that, we laughed and we cried.

Every human being has to bid farewell to this mortal world and go on the call of God. The capital of breath is limited. The whole creation runs on the command of Akal Purakh. No one is outside the command of that Lord. The main sentence of Dhansari Mahala Pratham is,

Hmm, I'm a man

Don't go over the deadline.

This is the immutable law of the universe. Everyone takes their turn to sit at the feet of God. But there are some people who come into this world and do such works that even after their death, the memory of their works remains in people's minds forever. Former minister S. Surjit Singh Kohli was one such personality. After the India-Pakistan partition, his ancestors settled in Punjab and he started his life's struggle from Patiala.

He left to take care of his big business in Punjab. It was a difficult task to start life afresh. Remembering the carnage that took place during the partition, his eyes would well up with tears. Bhai Gopal Singh started making truck tarpaulins in Patiala's Adalat Bazar and started earning his livelihood. S. Surjit Singh Kohli's father S. Sardara Singh Kohli worked hard with his father along with studies and was interested in social service work.

This interest grew so much that he became popular among the people of Patiala city and became an MLA by winning the election from Patiala city on the ticket of Shiromani Akali Dal. When S. Lachman Singh Gill's ministry came, Kohli was made the Deputy Minister of PWD Department. He remained the messiah of the people of Patiala city throughout his life. His life was so simple that even after becoming a minister, he continued to work for the people on a bicycle throughout his life. People still remember him for the development of Patiala city. Following in the footsteps of his father. Surjit Singh Kohli also started his political career from Patiala city. He was a courageous, combative and aggressive leader from the very beginning, as a result of which in 1983, the then government S. Kohli was sent to jail by the NSA and remained in jail for two and a half months.

He endured atrocities for Punjab and the Sikh community. During this period, Kohli became close to Prakash Singh Badal and Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra. In 1997, he became an MLA by defeating senior Congress leader Brahm Mahindra and became the Minister of Printing and Stationery Department in Prakash Singh Badal's cabinet. Like his father, Surjit Singh Kohli also kept his life very simple. I remember that when Kohli sahab became a minister in Prakash Singh Badal's cabinet in 1997, the security and home guards often complained that Kohli sahab used to go out on his scooter without informing anyone, covering his face with a cloth. During that time, he never panicked due to the bad atmosphere and maintained personal contact with the people. At that time, Kohli was closely associated with Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra and was considered a strong leader of the group. When there was a rift between Badal sahab and Tohra sahab, Kohli sahab left the ministry expressing his resignation on the suggestion of Tohra ji.

Later he became the Pradhan Sewak of Patiala and continued to serve the people of Patiala. Taking a stand for his workers, getting the work done and keeping the workers happy. Kohli was talented. Following in his footsteps, Ajitpal Singh Kohli came to serve the city of Patiala and made a place among the people. Due to this love and hard work, he got the opportunity to become the youngest mayor. As a mayor, he did exemplary work and changed the face of Patiala.

In the year 2022, Aam Aadmi Party defeated former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and won the MLA election from Patiala city. The second son Gurjeet Singh Kohli is working in a good position in BJP. Daughter Jassimran Kaur is married to Dubai's famous family Harwant Singh Sahni. I would like to say one more thing that S. Surjit Singh Kohli was ill for the last 5 years, but the children left no stone unturned in serving him.

The whole family remained engaged in service day and night, but no one was forced to obey God's command. We all pray that God gives strength to the departed soul to rest in his feet and to cherish the family.
