3 Chief Justices will be seen in the Supreme Court: Former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud retired in November 2024 and his tenure was for two years. The tenure of Chief Justices is usually not very long, but DY Chandrachud got a lot of time. At the same time, this year there will be a tenure of three Chief Justices in the Supreme Court. Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who has been serving as Chief Justice since November 10, 2024, will retire on May 13 this year. After this, Justice BR Gavi will become the Chief Justice and his tenure will end on November 23. After this Justice Surya Kant will become the Chief Justice. Thus, there will be three Chief Justices in the Supreme Court in 2025. Not only this, a total of 7 judges will retire from the Supreme Court this year.

Sanjeev Khanna’s tenure was very short

Current Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna did not even take the government accommodation allotted to him because his tenure as Chief Justice was very short. Thus, the Supreme Court of the country will have a tenure of three Chief Justices in one year. Apart from these Chief Justices, 7 judges will also retire from the Supreme Court this year. First, Justice V. Ramasubramaniam is scheduled to retire on January 5, 2025. His tenure lasted for about three years and he was elevated from the Kerala High Court to become a judge of the Supreme Court.

A total of 7 judges will retire this year

Justice Hrishikesh Roy is going to retire at the end of this month i.e. on January 31. His tenure in the Supreme Court also lasted for about 4 years. Before the Supreme Court, he served in the Gauhati High Court and was later made the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court. Whereas Sanjeev Khanna will retire on May 13. After him Justice Abhay S. Oka will retire on May 24, 2025. He has served in the Supreme Court for almost three years. Before joining the Supreme Court, he served as a judge in the Bombay High Court and then as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. Justice Bela Trivedi, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice BR Gavai are also scheduled to retire this year.

YV Chandrachud had the longest tenure in the Supreme Court

DY Chandrachud’s father YV Chandrachud has had the longest tenure as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He became the Chief Justice on February 22, 1978 and retired on July 11, 1985. Thus, he remained the Chief Justice for more than 7 years and 5 months. An interesting fact is that DY Chandrachud, who recently retired, also got a tenure of almost two years, which was very long. There are many Chief Justices who have got only a few months’ time.
