Supreme Court: Upon hearing the lawyer, CJI Surya Kant asked, “Did an astrologer say this?” — the courtroom erupted in laughter. Supreme Court: After listening to the lawyer, CJI Surya Kant said – ‘Has any astrologer said this?’, the courtroom echoed with laughter.

The country’s largest court i.e. the Supreme Court of India often brings news of serious legal debates and big decisions, but sometimes there are some moments inside the court room which bring a smile on the faces of everyone present there. One such very interesting and funny incident was seen in the court of the Chief Justice of the country (CJI) Surya Kant. During the live hearing of a case, when a lawyer put forward a unique and stubborn demand before the judge, even the CJI himself could not stop laughing. He showed such presence of mind on the demand of the lawyer that the entire court room echoed with laughter.

Know what was that unique demand of the lawyer

This whole matter started when an important petition was being heard before the court. After completing his arguments, the lawyer requested the bench to fix the next hearing of his case on a particular date or day. He insisted on the date from the court, which is considered quite unusual in normal court procedure. All the judges on the bench were surprised to see this strange demand of the lawyer and his special insistence on the date. The lawyer was adamant on his point as if holding the hearing on any other day other than that particular date would have a major impact on his case.

CJI Surya Kant’s wit and laughter in the court room

On hearing this demand of the lawyer, Chief Justice Justice Surya Kant immediately took command and in a very humorous tone asked the lawyer, “Has any astrologer advised you to hold the hearing on this particular date only?” The CJI said this so much that all the senior lawyers, Solicitor General and court staff present in the court room could not stop laughing. This light banter made the tense atmosphere of the court room completely pleasant. The lawyer also could not stop smiling at the CJI’s statement and agreed that the court dates are not decided by astrological calculations but on the basis of the court calendar and the pendency of the cases.

Why are such light moments necessary amidst the strict legal environment?

This funny exchange between the lawyers and judges of the Supreme Court is going viral on social media also. Legal experts say that due to the hearing of hundreds of complicated cases, constitutional cases and serious crimes every day, the mental pressure on judges and lawyers is very high. In such a situation, these short and pleasant conversations taking place inside the court room not only reduce the work stress of the judges, but also provide a new ease and strength to the relationship between the Bar and the Bench. This wit of CJI Surya Kant once again proved that the people sitting on the chair of justice also understand human sensitivities and humor very well.
