Supreme Court reprimands Punjab government, takes clear stand on the fast of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal

The Supreme Court has reprimanded the Punjab government for its irresponsible statements regarding the fast of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. The court said that a wrong impression is being spread in the media by the state officials and some farmer leaders that efforts are being made to end Dallewal’s fast. The court termed such statements as making the situation more complicated.

Court’s clear stand: No instructions to end the fast

The Supreme Court bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan clarified that the court has never directed Dallewal to end his fast.

    The court said, “We are only concerned about Dallewal’s health and want him to get medical attention as soon as possible.”

The Supreme Court has asked the Chief Secretary of Punjab and the Director General of Police to file an affidavit. In this it will have to be told to what extent the order of December 20 was followed.

    The Punjab government was directed to shift Dallewal to the nearest health centre.

Advocate General Gurminder Singh said that no effort is being made to end Dallewal’s fast.

Dallewal’s new petition and notice to the Center

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Central Government on Dallewal’s new petition.

    Dallewal has demanded the central government to fulfill the promises made after the repeal of the agricultural laws. Among these, the legal guarantee of MSP (Minimum Support Price) is prominent.
  • Next hearing date:
    The Supreme Court has fixed January 6 for the next hearing of the case.

Court’s message: Farmers and government need to work together to find a solution

The Supreme Court stressed that it is necessary to show goodwill towards Dallewal and other farmer leaders. The court asked the Punjab government to ensure that Dallewal’s health is not compromised.
