General elections were held in Pakistan on 8 February, but till now no party has been able to get absolute majority. Since then, a round of meetings has started between the parties to form a coalition government in Pakistan. However, Nawaz Sharif and Zardari's party has already announced the formation of an alliance. Meanwhile, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan demanding the cancellation of the February 8 elections on allegations of rigging. The petition was heard on Wednesday and the Supreme Court rejected the petition. Regarding the application, the court has said that this is just a publicity stunt.
Demand for stay order to stop formation of new government
It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court of Pakistan had imposed a fine on the petitioner for filing such an application. Retired Brigadier Ali Khan had last week requested direct monitoring of the judiciary and ordered fresh elections within 30 days to ensure fairness, transparency and accountability. In the petition filed, a request has also been made to put a stay on the formation of the new government until the matter is decided.
Court imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the petitioner
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faiz Isa dismissed the petition and imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the petitioner. Earlier, the court was informed that Ali was a former brigadier who was tried by court martial in 2012 and dismissed from service. The Chief Justice read out an e-mail sent to the court by the petitioner, in which he informed that he was abroad and requested to withdraw his petition. The court said that this is a publicity stunt. The applicant stated that he was not present in court as he was in Bahrain.
