New Delhi: The High Court has ordered a CBI investigation into the attack on ED officers in Sandeshkhali. The West Bengal government filed an application against this in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court refused to interfere in the High Court's decision and ordered to hand over mastermind Shahjahan Sheikh to the CBI.
ED officials who went to investigate in Sandeshkhali were attacked. A CBI investigation was demanded in that case and the matter reached the High Court. The Calcutta High Court had last week ordered the handing over of the case to the CBI. Not only this, the main accused of this violence, Shahjahan Sheikh, was also ordered to be handed over to CBI.
The West Bengal government appealed to the Supreme Court against the order of the Calcutta High Court. On behalf of Mamata Banerjee government, it was argued in the Supreme Court that the High Court's order for CBI investigation was taken in haste. The Supreme Court raised a question against the Bengal government that why did it take so much time to arrest the main accused Shahjahan Sheikh? In response, the Bengal government defended itself and said that seven accused had already been arrested. Only one accused was absconding. After the Bengal government protested against the High Court's objectionable comments about the Bengal Police and called them inappropriate, the Supreme Court agreed to quash the comments.
ED's lawyer said that the functioning of Bengal Police is under doubt. Because Shahjahan Sheikh, who is the main accused, had filed a complaint against the officers who were attacked and that complaint was also registered. Besides, the police also took a lot of time to hand over the accused to CBI.
Let us tell you that Shahjahan Sheikh, the mastermind of the attack on ED officers in Sandeshkhali, was absconding for 55 days. After this, Bengal Police arrested him on 29 February.
