Supreme Court rejects demand to extend nomination date for Varanasi Lok Sabha seat

New Delhi, May 15 (Hindustan Reporter) The Supreme Court has rejected the petition seeking extension of the date for Tamil Nadu farmer leader P Ayakannu to file nomination to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi constituency. The bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath said that this petition is not public interest litigation but publicity interest litigation.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court asked the petitioner that you are the leader of farmers in the South and have been working for their interests for almost 30 years and now why do you want to contest elections from Banaras. It seems from your petition that you just want publicity. The court asked the petitioner that he had not gone to work in the Varanasi constituency even for a single day or was involved in any social work there. Please give any one reason for contesting elections from there.
