Supreme Court bans all mining activities around Sariska Tiger Reserve

New Delhi, May 15 (Hindustan Reporter) The Supreme Court has banned all mining activities around the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan. A bench headed by Justice BR Gavai ordered a ban on all mining activities within a radius of one kilometer of the Critical Tiger Habitat.

The court has also asked the state government to prepare an action plan to stop illegal mining in the area of critical tiger habitat. In fact, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court alleging that in violation of the old orders of the court, many companies are doing illegal mining in and around the Critical Tiger Habitat without the approval of the National Board for Wildlife.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had also in January 2022 ordered action against illegal sand miners in Sariska Tiger Reserve. The NGT had taken cognizance of a newspaper report in which when forest guard Kewal Singh and some of his associates tried to stop a tractor belonging to a mining mafia in Sariska Tiger Reserve, the forest guard was crushed by the tractor and injured. He died during treatment in the hospital.
