Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams created history by reaching space for the third time. 59-year-old Sunita became the first woman to operate and test a new crewed spacecraft. Williams, who has previously carried the idol of Lord Ganesha and the Bhagavad Gita to space, has reached the International Space Station with her third passenger. After reaching the space station, she celebrated by dancing.
Williams and Wilmore were welcomed by ringing the bell, which is an old tradition of the ISS. They thanked the other members of the space station for such a wonderful welcome, calling them a family. Williams and Wilmore are the first astronauts to fly in Starliner. They successfully delivered the Boeing spacecraft to the ISS about 26 hours after launch at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
Docking was delayed by about an hour due to technical glitches such as a minor helium leak. On the way to the ISS, the crew completed a series of tests, including the first manned flight of the Starliner in space. They will spend about a week in space assisting in various tests and conducting scientific experiments. When returning to Earth from the Starliner, they plan to land on land rather than in the ocean.
NASA has always wanted a replacement for the SpaceX crew module to carry astronauts and Boeing is shaping it as part of the Starliner Commercial Crew Program. Sunita Williams admitted she was a little nervous before the flight but said she was not nervous about flying in the new spacecraft. She said when I reached the ISS it felt like I had returned home. Williams helped design the Starliner which has a seating capacity of 7 people.
