Veteran cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has given a strong reaction regarding the pitch of the fifth Test match being played between India and Australia in Sydney. After the fall of 15 wickets on the second day, Gavaskar lashed out at the repeated criticism of Indian pitches by Australian and English cricketers. He said that if this had happened in India, a big controversy would have arisen regarding the pitch.
Gavaskar’s statement:
- Questions on pitch quality:
“If 15 wickets had fallen in a day in India, it would have been described as a ‘hell-like situation’. There is so much grass on the Sydney pitch that a cow can graze. “It is not an ideal pitch for Test cricket because you want the match to go on till the fourth and fifth day.” - Taunt on western cricketers:
“We Indian players never complain about the pitch. But cricketers from Australia and England always criticize Indian pitches.” - Probability of result on third day:
“If there is no rain, the match may end on the third day itself. This is not a good pitch for Test cricket.”
Situation in India:
- India is trailing 1-2 in the series and it is very important to win the Sydney Test to save the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
- Losing this match will end India’s hopes of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
Gavaskar’s message:
Gavaskar stressed that Indian players do not complain in foreign conditions, but prove themselves through hard work. He also pointed out that Indian cricket has to face double standards time and again.
