Kobe, May 22 (Hindustan Reporter) India's Sumit Antil won the gold medal in the men's F64 javelin throw event with a throw of 69.50 meters at the World Para Athletic Championships in Kobe, Japan.
Mariyappan Thangavelu, on the other hand, broke the championship record by clearing a distance of over 1.88m in the men's high jump T63 final and won India's fourth gold of the tournament.
Antil is the current world record holder in men's javelin (F64) after winning the gold medal in the javelin throw F64 event at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games in October 2023 with a world record effort of 73.29 metres.
He shared the podium with compatriot Sandeep, who secured the bronze medal, while Sri Lanka's Dulan Kodithuwakku took the silver medal.
Thangavelu left behind USA's Ezra Frech and Sam Grewe who were only able to jump 1.85m and 1.82m to win the silver and bronze respectively.
Earlier in the day, Ekta Bhayan won gold in the women's F51 club throw with a season's best of 20.12m, while fellow Indian Kashish Lakra won silver with an effort of 14.56m.
India won a record 10 medals in the previous edition of the tournament, and has equaled that record in the current edition with four gold, four silver and two bronze.
Currently, India stands third behind China (15 gold, 13 silver, 13 bronze) and Brazil (14 gold, 6 silver, 5 bronze).
