Shimla, August 20 (HS). On the occasion of Sadbhavna Diwas, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi by offering floral tribute to his statue at Rajiv Chowk in Chotta Shimla on the occasion of his birth anniversary.

On this occasion, the Chief Minister also administered the Goodwill Day oath to the officers and employees of the Himachal Pradesh Secretariat.

The Chief Minister said that the nation knows late Rajiv Gandhi as the architect of modern India. During his tenure as Prime Minister, he took many visionary decisions to change the mindset of people and society.

He said that he was the president of National Students Union of India (NSUI) during the tenure of late Rajiv Gandhi as Prime Minister. On the demand of NSUI, Rajiv Gandhi reduced the voting age of youth from 21 years to 18 years, so that the youth of the country could ensure active participation in the democratic process. This was the biggest achievement of his tenure.

Sukhu said that as a result of Rajiv Gandhi's farsighted decisions, today India has emerged as a leading country in the field of information technology. He said that when America rejected India's demand for a supercomputer, then under his strong leadership the country took decisive steps to bring revolutionary changes in the field of information technology. He strongly advocated for the rights of women in the democratic process and 33 percent reservation was given in Panchayati Raj institutions. Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi raised her voice for 33 percent reservation for women in the Vidhan Sabha and Parliament.
