Kolkata, August 19 (HS). Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy on Sunday strongly protested against the police repression outside the Yuvabharati Stadium in Salt Lake, Kolkata. He demanded more strong protests against the police action on the peaceful demonstration of football lovers. He also called upon the supporters of Mohun Bagan and East Bengal to unite and join the protest again.
The much-awaited Durand Cup derby match was scheduled to be held between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in Kolkata on Sunday. All the tickets were sold out, but the derby was cancelled just before the match. Meanwhile, a protest was planned against the rape and murder of a female doctor of RG Kar Hospital, which was already a topic of discussion among football supporters. When the derby match was cancelled, thousands of supporters of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan gathered in front of the Yuvabharati Stadium. Some supporters of Mohammedan Club also joined this protest.
Earlier, Bidhannagar police had held a press conference invoking Section 163 near the stadium. Despite this, the protesters continued their protest. It is alleged that the police lathicharged the peaceful protesting football supporters and some were detained and put in prison vans.
Sukhendu Shekhar Roy has lodged a strong protest against this police repression. He wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday night, “I appeal to all football and sports supporters to gather in front of Yuvabharati Stadium in a peaceful and democratic manner and register protest against the arrest of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan supporters. Jai Mohun Bagan, Jai East Bengal.”
Though Sukhendu mentioned the arrest of supporters by the police, the police had detained only a few supporters and later released them. No one was arrested. Nevertheless, the Trinamool MP appealed to the supporters of both the clubs to unite against the alleged repressive policy of the police.
Sukhendu Shekhar Roy has been protesting against the RG Kar Hospital incident from the very beginning. On August 14, when the women's 'Raat Dakhal' campaign was announced against this incident, Sukhendu also joined it. He argued that he is also the father of a daughter and grandfather of a granddaughter, so his conscience prompted him to support this movement. On Sunday, Sukhendu demanded the interrogation of former principal of RG Kar Hospital Sandip Ghosh and Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal in CBI custody. He believes that by interrogating these two, answers to many questions can be found, such as why an attempt was made to show this incident as a suicide in the beginning?
He alleged that the police arrived with the dog squad only three days after the RG Kar incident, while the police claim that the dog squad was sent there on the day of the incident itself. The police alleged that Sukhendu is spreading false information on social media. He was sent a notice by the police, however, he did not appear at Lalbazar on Sunday.
