Maharashtra Elections: Assembly elections are going to be held on November 20 in Maharashtra, the country’s top sugar producing state. In which all the citizens of the state are being appealed to vote. At the same time, due to the sugarcane harvesting season, more than 12 lakh farm laborers will be deprived of voting.

More than 12 lakh sugarcane farmers from Marathwada, North Maharashtra and Vidarbha have migrated to other districts including Western Maharashtra for sugarcane cultivation. In such a situation, there is no possibility of them going back to their villages and voting.
Harvesting season started from 15th November

According to Maharashtra Sugarcane Cutters and Transport Association, harvesting of sugarcane crop starts from November 15. In which more than 15 lakh agricultural laborers from various districts migrated to other states including Western Maharashtra.

Demand for voting system

The association has sought intervention of the Aurangabad High Court bench in the matter and the Election Commission to ensure that this large group of voters does not lose their rights. On the other hand, the West Indian Sugar Mills Association said that they have made arrangements to send these workers home to vote on November 20.

Appealed in Aurangabad High Court

Jeevan Rathore, president of Maharashtra Sugarcane Cutters and Transport Association, appealed to the Aurangabad High Court that 12 to 15 lakh workers from Marathwada, North Maharashtra and Vidarbha migrate to Western Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu for sugarcane harvesting. . , They have already migrated during the harvest season. They will now return home in April-May next year. Therefore, there is an appeal to the Election Commission to make proper arrangements to give them the right to vote.

The absence of such a large number of voters can weaken democracy. They will lose the right to choose their leader. In Maharashtra, where no single party has a majority, the exodus of lakhs of farm workers will impact the elections. Therefore, an appeal has been made to these agricultural laborers to arrange for suitable transportation on the day of polling to bring them back to their hometowns. Further, the State Sugar Commissioner has been directed to declare Maharashtra State Cooperative Sugar Factories Federation Limited, West Indian Sugar Mills Association and all sugar mills as a public holiday on the election day.
