Australia News: Scientists have warned that Australia, the world's smallest continent and largest country, is in danger of severe drought. The surprising thing is that drought that starts after a few years can last for 20 years instead of one or two years. The research team studied the entire spectrum of past droughts. With the help of climate models, scientists have simulated droughts of the last 1250 years.
Many universities of Australia have jointly prepared a study model. Scientists fear that Australia may soon face severe drought. If the mega-drought continues for years, it will have ramifications for ecosystems and humans. Scientists have noted that such droughts have been recorded before. Desert megadroughts were found before the Industrial Revolution and into the 20th century.
A drought of one or two years does not cause much harm to the environment and eco-system, but a prolonged drought creates dire effects. Sometimes the effects of megadrugs last for decades. The researchers noted that the worst drought in the American Southwest in the early 21st century is still affecting the drought 24 years later.
Professor Neril Abram, associated with this study, said that due to climate change there has been a prolonged drought in South Western and Eastern Australia. The Murray Darling Basin is Australia's largest agricultural region. These are areas where the risk of drought will increase due to gradually decreasing rainfall. A study report on this has been published in the Journal of Hydrology and Earth Sciences.
