Human Brain: Till date we have understood that memory is related only to the brain. But recent research has shown that many other parts of the body also store memories. A study has been published in the Nature Communications journal. It is claimed that other cells of the body also have the ability to store memories. This study could change the way memory-related diseases are treated.
Other parts of the body also store memories
Researchers at New York University found that cells in different parts of the body also have the ability to store memories, indicating that learning occurs not only in the brain, but in other parts of the body as well. This means that our body’s memory is not limited to the brain.
Like the brain, the body also needs to be understood.
Other cells in the body can also learn and form memories, said lead author Nikolay V. Kukushkin of New York University. Like brain cells, non-brain cells also activate memory genes in response to new information. When brain cells detect patterns in information, they activate memory genes. It then attaches itself to other cells to form a new memory.
He said the discovery shows that in the future we will need to understand our body as well as our brain. The research hopes to better understand the processes of memory retention and learning by studying the body’s cells.
