Strong earthquake in Taiwan, intensity 7.4 on Richter scale, tsunami warning in Japan

Tsunami warning in Japan: Earthquake tremors were felt on the east coast of Taiwan on Wednesday. Its intensity was measured at 7.4 on the Richter scale. This powerful earthquake has been confirmed by the US Geological Survey (USGS).

According to the administration's seismological center, the epicenter was located at a depth of 15.5 kilometers in the Pacific Ocean, 25.0 kilometers south-southeast of Hualin County Hall, the Central News Agency reported.

A tsunami warning has been issued for southern Japan due to the earthquake, “Significant earthquake, preliminary information, 6.5 – 11 km northeast of Hualien City, Taiwan,” the USGS said in a post on Twitter.

A magnitude of 5+ was recorded in Nantou County in central Taiwan, Yilan County in the northeast and Miaoli County in the north, the Central Weather Agency said. While in the north, Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City and Hsinchu County, Taichung City, Changhua County recorded intensity level 5.

Metro systems in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung were suspended due to the earthquake and the suspension was expected to last 40 to 60 minutes, CNA reported. A tsunami warning has been issued for coastal areas of Miyakojima and Yaeyama regions of southwestern Japan, as well as the main island of Okinawa Prefecture. NHK reported that officials have urged residents of these areas to immediately move to higher ground or safe places.

Reports indicate that a 30 cm tsunami was recorded on Yonaguni Island around 9:18 am (Japan Time). Forecasters estimate that tsunami waves could reach a height of 3 meters in the affected area. The warning was issued because of the 7.5-magnitude earthquake that struck shortly before 9 a.m., according to NHK. The Japan Meteorological Agency has identified the epicenter of the earthquake near Taiwan.

The estimated time of arrival of the tsunami is estimated to be 9:30 am in the Miyakojima-Yayama area and 10:00 am in the Okinawa main island area. In response, the Japan Meteorological Agency sounded the alarm for Miyakojima and Okinawa islands, warning residents of waves up to 3 meters high, NHK reported.
