‘Stop removing names from voter list, otherwise we will become banana republic’: Mehbooba Mufti calls for protest at Jantar Mantar on September 29

New Delhi/Srinagar. The opposition’s protest is now going to take to the streets of the capital Delhi regarding the functioning of the Election Commission, Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list and issues related to minorities. Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and President of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti has appealed to all the secular and democratic forces of the country to gather at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on 29 September 2026.

Releasing a video message, Mehbooba Mufti alleged that at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), names of opposition supporters and minorities are being systematically removed from the voter list across the country. He said in a warning tone that if such tampering with electoral processes and voter lists continues, India will become a ‘Banana Republic’, where democracy will be in name only.

The protest, led by the ‘Indian Muslim Monitoring Committee’ and various civil organisations, is being organized on September 29 (Tuesday) between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm. Giving her full support to this protest, Mehbooba Mufti has appealed to the citizens, civil society and political parties of the country to unite.

In his message released on social media platform ‘X’, the PDP chief said:

“This fight is not about any one state or party, but to save the Constitution and pluralistic fabric of India. The way votes are being counted on a large scale using the Election Commission and marginalized sections are being deprived of voting rights, it is an attack on the foundation of democracy. Everyone will have to come forward to protect the brotherhood of the country and the Ganga-Jamuni culture.”

There are mainly three big issues at the center of this proposed protest at Jantar Mantar:

  • Alleged deletion of names from voter list (SIR controversy): The opposition alleges that in the name of Special Intensive Revision (SIR), names of ‘unmapped’ voters are being removed on a large scale in Delhi, Maharashtra and other states, with opposition supporters and minority communities being the most affected.

  • Protection of religious places and minorities: Mehbooba Mufti has also expressed strong anger over the incidents of targeting of places of worship and religious properties of minorities in different parts of the country.

  • Questions on the autonomy of the Election Commission: Reference is also being made to the recently surfaced news in which it was claimed that two election commissioners within the Election Commission had raised objections to the decisions. Opposition parties say that electoral fairness has been endangered by the functioning of the Chief Election Commissioner.

An important joint meeting of the top leaders of the ‘India’ alliance is also proposed on September 30, the very next day after Mehbooba Mufti’s call for demonstration at Jantar Mantar on September 29. In this, the recent stand of the Election Commission, SIR controversy of voter list and common strategy for the upcoming assembly elections will be discussed.

Political analysts believe that after the political allegations leveled against the Chief Election Commissioner by the former Chief Secretary of Kerala and now this demonstration at Jantar Mantar, the issue of impartiality of the Election Commission from Parliament to the streets is going to become more heated.
