New Delhi, March 6 (HS). Due to purchasing in some selected shares, the domestic stock market once again succeeded in reaching new highs today. Sensex closed after crossing the level of 74 thousand points for the first time today. However, investors faced huge losses due to large-scale selling in midcap and smallcap stocks. After the entire day's trading, Sensex closed with a gain of 0.55 percent and Nifty with a gain of 0.53 percent.
In today's business, there was heavy buying in shares of banking, IT and pharmaceuticals sectors. There was selling pressure in shares of public sector enterprise, energy, realty, oil and gas, utility and metal sectors. There was continuous selling pressure in the broader market today, due to which the BSE midcap index closed with a decline of 0.65 percent. Similarly, the Smallcap index ended today's trading with a loss of 1.91 percent.
Despite the market reaching a record high today, due to all-round selling in the broader market, the wealth of stock market investors reduced by more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore. The market capitalization of BSE listed companies declined to Rs 391.37 lakh crore (provisional) after today's trading. Their market capitalization on the last trading day i.e. Tuesday was Rs 392.96 lakh crore. In this way, investors suffered a loss of about Rs 1.59 lakh crore from today's trading.
Today, there was active trading in 3,940 shares in BSE in the day's trading. Of these, 900 shares closed with gains, while 2,960 shares were in decline, while 80 shares closed without any movement. There was active trading in 2,209 shares in NSE today. Of these, 419 shares closed in the green after earning profit and 1,790 shares closed in the red after incurring a loss. Similarly, out of 30 shares included in Sensex, 11 shares closed with gains and 19 shares closed with decline. Out of the stocks included in Nifty, 34 stocks closed in the green mark and 16 stocks closed in the red mark.
BSE Sensex opened today with a weakness of 89.43 points at the level of 73,587.70 points. After the start of trading, there was a continuous tussle between buyers and sellers in the first session of the day, due to which the movement of this index was also seen fluctuating. Under selling pressure, this index fell by 355.65 points to 73,321.48 points. After 1 pm, all-round buying started in the market, due to which this index also gained momentum. With the support of continuous buying, this index jumped by 829.79 points from the day's low and reached its highest level of 74,151.27 points with a gain of 474.14 points. After buying and selling throughout the day, the Sensex closed at 74,085.99 points with a gain of 408.86 points.
Like the Sensex, NSE's Nifty started trading today with a fall of 28.80 points at the level of 22,327.50 points. After the market opened, due to selling pressure, this index fell by 131.95 points to 22,224.35 points. On receiving support from buyers in the second session of the day, the index jumped by 272.85 points from the low level and managed to reach its highest level of 22,497.20 points with a gain of 140.90 points. After the whole day's trading, Nifty closed at 22,474.05 points with a gain of 117.75 points.
