Paris, August 2 (HS). American star gymnast Simone Biles won the gold medal with a brilliant performance in the women's all-around final at the Paris Olympics.
The American gymnast finished behind Brazil's Rebecca Andrade with a total of 59.131 points. Her compatriot and Tokyo Olympic champion Sunisa Lee won the bronze medal with a total of 56.465 points. Rebecca won the silver medal with 57.932 points, her sixth medal at the Summer Games.
Sunisa has been battling multiple kidney ailments over the last 15 months. But when the situation demanded, she performed her best and achieved a podium finish. Biles' win in the women's all-around event marked her second gold medal at the ongoing Paris Olympics. She joined the exclusive club of two-time Olympic all-around champions along with Larisa Latynina and Vera Caslavska.
The American gymnast was trailing the Brazilian after the first two rotations. After a shaky uneven bars routine in the first half of the competition, Biles found herself behind. At the end of the second rotation, Rebecca was on top with 29.766 points. She was followed by Algeria's Kaylia Nemour with 29.566 points and 29.566 points, respectively, and Simone Biles with 29.566 points.
However, after the second rotation, Biles came into full rhythm and pushed Rebecca out of the top. After the third rotation, Biles was on top with 44.065 points. She maintained the lead and won the gold medal. After her win, Biles' tally of world and Olympic medals now stands at 39. Along with this, the American gymnast also holds the record for most world championship medals (30) and most women's all-around world titles (six).
