Stalin’s DMK rejects ‘Bengal-Kerala model’, thwarts Thalapathy Vijay’s attempt to form an alliance with TVK Stalin’s DMK rejects ‘Bengal-Kerala model’, thwarts Thalapathy Vijay’s attempt to form an alliance with TVK

There is a tremendous boil in the politics of Tamil Nadu, the most influential political state of South India. The opposition ‘INDIA’ alliance formed at the national level against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) includes Thalapathy Vijay’s fledgling party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s efforts to bring together Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) had started, which has been completely rejected by DMK. Refusing to accept the ‘Bengal-Kerala formula’ given by Dalit-centric party VCK and Congress, Stalin’s party has made it clear that the ground reality of the state is completely different from that of other states. Amidst this political tussle, there has been a serious rift in the relations between DMK and Congress.

What is Bengal-Kerala model? Which was to be implemented in Tamil Nadu

Currently, there is a lot of discussion about ‘Bengal-Kerala Model’ in political circles. This is a strategic formula under which regional parties contest elections as arch rivals to each other at the state level, but at the national level, they remain part of the ‘INDIA’ alliance by uniting against the central government or the BJP. In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee’s TMC, Left parties and Congress are pitted against each other in the state. Similarly, in Kerala too, there is a direct contest for power between the Congress-led UDF and the Left-led LDF. However, on Lok Sabha or national issues, all these parties are seen on one platform in Delhi. VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan and the Congress wanted to unite Vijay’s TVK and Stalin’s DMK together at the national level on similar lines.

DMK’s sharp counterattack: Congress stabbed it in the back due to greed for ministerial post

Expressing strong objection to this proposed formula, DMK MP from Coimbatore Ganapathy P. Rajkumar has taken a very aggressive stance. While talking to the media, he made serious allegations against Congress and said that Congress has joined hands with Thalapathy Vijay’s TVK only to get ministerial post in Tamil Nadu assembly elections and lick the cream of power. The MP said in very strong words that Congress has backstabbed the DMK and now to hide its shortcomings, it is using VCK as a messenger or mediator to convince the Stalin leadership. He made it clear that the top leadership of DMK will never accept this hollow proposal.

Questions raised on Vijay’s TVK: Why so much desperation for a party without any MP?

Highlighting the changed political circumstances of Tamil Nadu, the DMK MP also targeted Thalapathy Vijay’s party. He argued that why is Congress so desperate to make TVK, which does not have a single MP in the national parliament, a part of the ‘INDIA’ block? Opposition parties should seriously introspect on this. He reiterated that BJP has always been trying to weaken the regional parties and DMK is strongly fighting its ideological battle against it. It is completely clear from the statements of the MP that at present all is not well between Congress and DMK in Tamil Nadu and due to this dispute, the opposition alliance at the national level may face a big blow.
