Sprouts are healthy, but these guys still shouldn’t eat them? Eating daily will increase problems

In today’s era, every fitness conscious person starts his morning with a bowl of fresh sprouts. From gym-going youth to people who want to lose weight, everyone includes sprouted moong, chana, moth and peanuts in their diet. There is no doubt that sprouts are called ‘superfood’ because it is a treasure trove of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. But do you know that the sprouts which you are eating with great enthusiasm every day considering them to be the most beneficial for your health, can become a serious problem instead of being beneficial for people with certain health conditions? According to modern nutrition science and medical research, people suffering from certain physical problems should avoid eating sprouts, otherwise their problems may increase instead of reducing. Let us know in detail which people should avoid eating sprouts and what are the medical reasons behind it.

Sprouts are always preferred to be eaten raw (in the form of salad or mixed with some lemon-onion). But nutrition experts say that the moist and warm environment in which seeds are germinated is also the most favorable environment for the growth of dangerous bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella. People who have weak immunity (such as the elderly, young children, cancer patients or people who have recently recovered from surgery), their bodies are unable to fight these bacteria. In such a situation, the risk of food poisoning, severe stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea and serious bacterial infection increases manifold by consuming raw sprouts. Therefore, people with weak immunity should never eat sprouts without boiling or cooking them properly.

Sprouted grains are rich in fiber and plant proteins, which are considered good for the digestive system of a normal person. But for people whose digestive system is already sensitive or who are suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), acidity, constipation or bloating, sprouts can become a problem for them. Raw sprouts contain resistant starch and complex carbohydrates that the intestines have to work very hard to digest. When people with weak digestion eat it, they may face serious problems like gas, heaviness in the stomach and heartburn. Even if such people want to eat sprouts, they should always eat it by steaming or boiling it lightly so that its tough elements become easy to digest.

According to health experts, people suffering from certain diseases should also be very careful in consuming sprouts:

  • Kidney Patients: Sprouts are high in potassium and phosphorus. People whose kidneys do not function properly or who are on dialysis, their body is unable to expel excess potassium, which can have a negative impact on heart health.

  • Thyroid and gout patients: Sprouted grains contain some anti-nutrients and purines that can increase uric acid levels. Complaints of joint pain may increase in patients with gout.

If you are also facing any of these health problems, then definitely consult your doctor or dietician before including sprouts in your diet, so that your health remains safe.
