Veteran Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar announced her retirement from the sport on Monday. Dipa missed a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics by a narrow margin. 31-year-old Dipa, who became India's first Olympic gymnast, finished fourth in the vault event of the Rio Games and missed the bronze medal by just 0.15 points.
Dipa said that after much thought, I have decided to retire from competitive gymnastics. This was not an easy decision but in my opinion this is the right time. For as long as I can remember, gymnastics has been at the center of my life and through many ups and downs I am grateful for every moment. Almost the entire country remained awake the whole night during the Deepa program during the Rio Olympics.
Achievements of Deepa Karmakar
Rio Olympics 2016: Finished fourth in the vault event, the highest finish by any Indian female gymnast at the Olympics.
Commonwealth Games 2014: Won a bronze medal in the vault event of the Games held in Glasgow, which gave him a new identity at the international level.
Asian Championship: Won gold medal in the Asian Championship held in Bhubaneswar in 2015.
Padmashree Award: In 2017, Dipa was awarded the Padmashree Award, India's fourth highest honour, for her contribution to sports.
Flick Flak: Dipa successfully performed a difficult vault technique called Produnova which is challenging and only a few gymnasts can do.
