India's 17-year-old Grandmaster D Gukesh has created history by winning the Candidates Chess Tournament title. He became the youngest challenger to win a World Championship title. He broke Garry Kasparov's 40 year old record. Gukesh played a draw with American Hikaru Nakamura in the 14th and final round. Gukesh scored a tournament-high nine points in 14 games to set up a World Championship challenger. He will challenge current world champion Ding Liren of China later this year. Gukesh, a resident of Chennai, broke Kasparov's record. Who achieved the feat of becoming the youngest challenger to win the tournament in 1984 at the age of 22. In 2018, Gukesh won a total of five gold medals in the Asian Youth Chess Championship and became a Grandmaster in 2019. At this time his age was 12 years, seven months and 17 days. As the winner, Gukesh has received a prize of Rs 78.5 lakh.
