Afghanistan's Zakia Khudadadi has created history by becoming the first athlete to win a medal for the refugee team at the Paris Paralympics. Zakia won the bronze medal in Taekwondo by defeating Turkey's Ekinci Nursihan in the women's 47kg category.
After the match at the Grand Palace in Paris, Zakia jumped with joy and celebrated by throwing her helmet in the air. After this victory, Zakia became emotional while talking to the media. Telling them that it was a wonderful moment, my heart started beating fast because I thought I had won the bronze medal. This medal is for the women of Afghanistan and all the refugees. I hope that one day peace will come to my country. Zakia was born without hands. Zakia started practicing taekwondo at the age of 11, hiding in a secret gym in her hometown of Herat in western Afghanistan. Women were banned from participating in sports after the rise of the Taliban in 2021. Zakia somehow managed to escape from Afghanistan and after appeals to the international community, she was allowed to represent the country at the Tokyo Olympics. After the Tokyo Paralympics, Zakia settled in Paris where she got a chance to play for the refugee team at the Paris Paralympics 2024.
