Javelin throw star Neeraj Chopra and steeplechase athlete Avinash Sable will lead India's challenge against world heavyweights when the Diamond League season finale begins in Brussels on Friday.
For the first time, the Diamond League finals will be spread over two days, with the world's top athletes, including Olympic medallists, competing in 32 events. Pole vault record holder Armand du Plantis, US women's sprinter Shaqueri Richardson and hurdles star Sydney McLaughlin Levron will also be highlights.
Sable, the national record holder in the 3,000m steeplechase, finished 11th at the Paris Olympics. He will be participating in the Diamond League for the first time and his event is on Friday. Neeraj, who won gold in Tokyo and silver in Paris, will take to track and field on Saturday with the aim of ending the season with a gold medal. For the first time, India will have two players in the Diamond League final. Sable was 14th in the league list with three points. Sable made it to the top-12 cutoff after higher-ranked Ethiopian Lamecha Girma, New Zealand's Jordie Beamish, Japan's Ryuji Mura and America's Hilary Bor withdrew their names. On July 7, Sable finished sixth in the Paris stage. Neeraj has qualified for the final by finishing fourth with 14 points. He finished second in the Doha and Lausanne stages.
