Spices Export: This state of India became the ‘Ginger King’ of the world! There is a competition to buy it in America and UAE, farmers are becoming rich through farming

India is called the ‘home of spices’ across the world. Whether it is to enhance the taste of food or to make tea rich in medicinal properties, ginger is a staple of every Indian kitchen. But now Indian ginger is making its mark not only in the country but also in the international markets. According to recent reports, a particular state of India has emerged as the ‘Ginger King’ for the world. Powerful and Gulf countries like the United States (US) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are standing in line to buy the high quality ginger produced in this state. From a reporter’s perspective, this news is a very positive sign for Indian agricultural exports and rural economy.

Madhya Pradesh becomes the largest ginger producing state in the country

According to the analysis of latest data of Agriculture and Spices Board, which is called the heart of India, Madhya Pradesh Has achieved top position in the entire country in terms of ginger production. India accounts for more than one-third of the total global ginger production, of which Madhya Pradesh alone contributes more than 31%. Due to the favorable temperature of the state, fertile sandy loam soil and modern techniques adopted by the farmers, lakhs of metric tons of high quality ginger is being produced here every year. Apart from Madhya Pradesh, states like Karnataka, Odisha, Assam and Meghalaya are also involved in this race.

Why is there a competition to buy Indian ginger in foreign markets?

There are several important reasons behind the increasing demand for Indian ginger in the global market, which make it different from other countries:

  • Pungent taste and pleasant aroma: Oleoresin and essential oils are found in abundance in Indian ginger, due to which its taste is very spicy and aroma is strong. Foreign companies use it extensively in food processing and spices.

  • Rich in medicinal properties: The demand for natural immunity boosters has increased across the world since the COVID-19 pandemic. US and UAE pharmaceutical companies are importing ginger in large quantities from India to make herbal tea, cough syrup and traditional medicines.

  • Strict Food Safety Standards: Its credibility has now increased significantly at the global level due to Indian exporters following the stringent regulations of FSSAI and US FDA.

Farmers’ fortunes are changing due to export

Ginger cultivation is now proving to be an excellent cash crop for the farmers as compared to traditional crops. Due to the huge orders and huge demand from abroad, farmers are getting very good prices for ginger in the local markets also. The government is also providing financial assistance for setting up ginger processing and cold storage units through Agri-Export Zones and PM Krishi Sinchai Yojana. If this pace continues, then in the coming times, India’s Ginger King State will create a new history in the global spice trade.
