Spent 11 years in jail, hanged father-in-law, murdered wife… How Asif Ali Zardari became the President of Pakistan for the second time

Asif Ali Zardari has been appointed as the new President of Pakistan, making him the President for the second time. On Saturday, Zardari took oath at the Presidential Palace Aiwan-e-Sadr under the chairmanship of Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faiz Isa. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, chiefs of the three services, senior officers and diplomats attended the swearing-in ceremony.

Zardari received 255 votes in the National Assembly, making him the first person to be elected President of Pakistan twice. Asif Ali Zardari, husband of Pakistan's former and first female Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, is the co-chairman of the Pakistan People's Party. He ran as a candidate of the coalition between PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). His rival, 75-year-old Mahmood Khan Achakzai, got 119 votes and was supported by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), which was fielded by jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party .

Zardari's father-in-law was Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was hanged by the military regime in 1979. Zulfikar served as Foreign Minister of Pakistan at the age of 34 and became President in 1971. Asif Ali Zardari was born in Karachi, Pakistan, the father of Benazir Bhutto's three children.

Zardari's wife Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a bomb and gun attack in 2007. Zardari spent 11 years in prison on corruption charges, including extortion and kidnapping cases, although he was not convicted and acquitted on all counts. Zardari was once known as “Mr. Ten Percent” due to allegations of demanding 10% bribe in government contracts.

Zardari was jailed for the first time in 1990, then again in 1996. He was granted bail in 2004 but was arrested again due to failure to stand trial in a murder case. Apart from this, cases were registered against Zardari in many countries including Britain and Spain.
