National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval may soon visit China’s capital Beijing. This will be his first official visit to China in five years. During this, he will lead the Indian delegation in the Special Representative (SR) talks between India and China on the border issue. Earlier in December 2019, such talks were held in New Delhi.
decision to resume talks
The decision to resume Special Representative talks was taken at a meeting held in Kazan, Russia on October 23. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping attended this meeting. According to sources, this visit of NSA Doval may take place in late December or early January. However, no official announcement has been made yet regarding the venue of the yatra.
Tension on the border and hope for solution
A new round of talks between the two countries is likely to begin after the withdrawal of troops from Depsang and Demchok areas of eastern Ladakh. India’s special representative for these talks will be Ajit Doval, while China will be represented by Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The military standoff between India and China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020. In the same year, in June 2020, the clash in Galwan Valley had created serious tension in the relations between the two countries.
Last meeting and withdrawal of troops
The agreement on withdrawal of troops between the two countries was finalized on 21 October 2023. Two days after this agreement, Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping met in Kazan during the BRICS summit. In this meeting, both the leaders had agreed to restart other dialogue mechanisms including Special Representative talks on the border issue.
Stagnation of talks in the last five years
No SR talks could be held in the last five years due to tension in eastern Ladakh. Now that the process of withdrawal of troops has started, hopes for resumption of dialogue between the two countries have increased.
Possibility of a new beginning in India-China relations
This visit of Ajit Doval can prove to be an important step towards restoring trust between India and China and resolving the border dispute. The talks are not only expected to lead to progress on border issues, but will also likely improve bilateral relations.
