Berlin, June 18 (HS). Spain international goalkeeper Unai Simon said on Monday that he will undergo surgery on his wrist injury at the end of Euro 2024.
Simon, who plays for Athletic Bilbao, revealed he suffered the injury in a domestic accident several months ago. He added that although the problem causes him constant pain, it does not prevent him from playing or training.
“I will have an operation once the European Championship is over and then we will see how long I will be out of action,” the goalkeeper, who recently celebrated his 27th birthday, told a press conference on Monday.
“I haven't given it much thought, and we have seen during this season that it hasn't affected me,” said Simon, who won the 'Zamora' award for the best goalkeeping record in La Liga last season despite the problem.
The next La Liga season will start in mid-August, and if Simon is unfit, Julen Aguirrezabala will get a chance to start in La Liga. Aguirrezabala was first choice as Athletic Bilbao won the Copa del Rey for the first time in 40 years last season and recently extended his contract until June 2027.
