Beijing (China), 05 January: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is scheduled to hold summit talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday. The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to enhance economic ties and cultural exchanges beyond North Korea. The talks come nearly two months after the two leaders met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Gyeongju in early November.
This information was given in the report of The Korea Times. Li arrived in Beijing on Sunday on a four-day state visit to China. A few hours before this, North Korea fired unidentified ballistic missiles towards the East Sea. This is Lee’s first visit to China since assuming office in June last year and the first visit by a South Korean president to China since 2019.
South Korean President Lee will seek China’s support to improve strained relations with Pyongyang and make progress in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Before the summit, Lee will attend the Korea-China Economic Forum in Beijing. Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, SK Group Chairman Chei Tae-won and LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo will prominently participate in this forum.
South Korea’s National Security Advisor Wee Sung-lak said the two sides are expected to sign more than 10 MoUs for cooperation in various fields. Wei said cultural exchange will also be another important issue. During this period, sensitive issues are also likely to be raised. In an interview with China’s state broadcaster CCTV on Friday, Lee again said South Korea’s stance on respecting the “One China” policy remains unchanged.
