South Africa’s 18-man squad announced for the first test against Australia, Anrich Nortje also included

Immediately after the exciting conclusion of the current ODI matches in international cricket, the much-awaited three-match Test series between the two arch-rival teams—South Africa and Australia—is going to begin. Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday officially announced its 18-member preliminary team for the first Test match of this home series, which is considered very important in terms of the current cycle and points table of the World Test Championship (WTC). This high-voltage Test series between the two teams will start from 9 October 2026 at the historic Kingsmead ground in Durban.

The biggest and most relieving news for the Proteas team, which is going to play at home, is the return of its most lethal fast bowler Kagiso Rabada to the team. The confidence of the South African camp has reached sky high with the inclusion of Rabada, who was out of the field for a long time due to muscle strain and injury, in the team. Known for his impeccable line-length and lethal pace in the red-ball format, the presence of Rabada has always been a major headache for the Kangaroo batsmen. However, the medical team is constantly monitoring his fitness to enter international cricket directly after a long rehabilitation, due to which the discussion is still going on whether he will be seen bowling directly in the playing XI of the Durban Test or he will be given extra rest till the second Test.

The second most exciting aspect of this 18-member team selection is the much-awaited return of explosive fast bowler Anrich Nortje. Nortje, who has lethal pace and the ability to bowl at a speed of 150 km per hour, has become a part of South Africa’s traditional white jersey Test squad for the first time since March 2023. Nortje was mostly confined to limited overs cricket and overseas leagues due to repeated injuries during the last three years. Now that Nortje and Rabada have joined the South African squad together, this match will be no less than a litmus test for the Australian batsmen on the fast and bouncy pitch of Kingsmead.

South Africa’s head coach Shukri Conrad has left no dearth of options in the fast bowling department this time. Apart from Rabada and Nortje, emerging sensational fast bowler Gerald Coetzee, tall left-handed all-rounder Marco Jensen, Dane Patterson and Corbin Bosch have also been included in the initial 18 players. On the spin bowling front, domestic specialist Keshav Maharaj, experienced off-spinner Simon Harmer and all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy have been included in the squad, which shows that the host team is preparing a multi-dimensional strategic balance to deal with every situation.

South African team head coach Shukri Conrad openly shared his strategic plan on the selection of the initial 18 players. Conrad said that before the first Test, a special and rigorous training camp will be organized to bring the players to match-fitness and adapt to the conditions. During this, the team players will play a two-day ‘Intra-squad practice match’ against each other and undergo various ‘scenario-based’ training sessions. Only after this intensive exercise will the selection committee and team management select the final 15 members from the initial 18 players, from whom Kingsmead’s playing eleven will be selected.

Head coach Shukri Conrad said in an official release issued by Cricket South Africa that the main objective of creating a large bowling pool is to provide complete freedom and flexibility in selection to the team management. He clarified that there are different styles of bowlers in the team and the intra-squad matches in the coming week will make it clear which bowling and batting combination will prove to be the most lethal according to the actual conditions of the Durban weather and the Kingsmead pitch. It will be very interesting to see what strategy Australia’s world-class batting line-up comes up with against the current World Test Champion team.

Experienced batsman Temba Bavuma will take over the responsibility of captaining the South African team, while vice-captain and experienced opener Aiden Markram will remain the backbone of the batting order. The batting has also been given depth with the inclusion of talented players like David Bedingham, Tony De Zorzi, Wiaan Mulder, young explosive batsman Tristan Stubbs and wicketkeeper batsmen Ryan Rickelton and Kyle Warren in the middle order. In the team, Marques Ackerman has also been given a chance to prove himself on the big stage based on his domestic performance.

South Africa’s official 18-man Test squad is as follows: Temba Bavuma (captain), Marques Ackerman, David Bedingham, Corbin Bosch, Gerald Coetzee, Tony De Zorzi, Simon Harmer, Marco Jensen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Anrich Nortje, Dane Patterson, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verrey (Wicketkeeper).
