South Africa said on Saturday that it would talk to the Indian government after reports of the arrest of both the Gupta brothers. One of the Gupta brothers is wanted here for his alleged role in looting billions of rupees from state-owned enterprises. Therefore, further action will be taken by contacting India. Indian-origin family Atul, Ajay and Rajesh Gupta are accused of embezzling billions of rands (South African currency) in South Africa through their close ties with former President Jacob Zuma. After Jacob Zuma stepped down from the presidency in 2018, the three and their families fled to Dubai. However, later the police and investigating agencies also went after him.
The Gupta family owns IT, media and mining businesses
The United Arab Emirates rejected the extradition appeal of Rajesh and Atul in 2023. Due to which South Africa declared them fugitives. Both the brothers built a big empire in IT, media and mining sectors.
Builder accused of inciting suicide
Notably, Anil and Ajay Gupta were arrested on Saturday for allegedly abetting the suicide of a builder from Uttarakhand. The builder named the Gupta brothers in his suicide note before jumping from the roof of his multi-storey apartment building. It is uncertain whether this is the same Ajay Gupta who fled to South Africa along with his brothers Atul and Rajesh and who is also the third man on South Africa's wanted list.
