The historic indefinite fast of environmentalist and reformer Sonam Wangchuk continues, demanding special status for Ladakh and environmental protection. Today is the 20th day of his peaceful movement and hunger strike. This movement, which is going on amidst the harsh cold of Ladakh and deteriorating health, has now started getting open support from the enlightened citizens of the country and Bollywood celebrities too. In this episode, famous filmmaker and superstar Aamir Khan’s ex-wife Kiran Rao has openly supported Sonam Wangchuk. Kiran Rao, through her social media post, has strongly criticized the government and termed the Centre’s silence on this entire sensitive issue as extremely disappointing and inhuman.

Filmmaker Kiran Rao has changed the profile picture (DP) of his official Instagram handle to show solidarity and strong support towards the movement. He has put Sonam Wangchuk’s picture on his new DP, on which ‘I Support Sonam’ is written in big letters. This step of Kiran Rao is becoming increasingly viral on social media and is giving a new strength to the Ladakh movement in the digital space.
‘The country is indebted to you’: Kiran Rao salutes the protesters
Along with changing the DP, Kiran Rao has also shared a very emotional and strong message in support of the protesters. She wrote in her post, “I stand strongly with Sonam Wangchuk, Abhijit Dipke, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and all the conscious citizens of this country who are protesting peacefully for the rights of our students and Ladakh. I salute Sonam ji, Neha, Manish, Amin and all the other colleagues associated with this campaign. They all have worked hard to ensure justice for the country and future generations. You have chosen the difficult path of hunger strike. Our entire country will always be indebted to you for waking us up from our deep indifference and slumber and reminding us that every citizen’s voice matters in a democracy.”
Targeted at the government: 19 days of silence called inhuman
In the second part of his post, Kiran Rao raised sharp questions on the wavering attitude and silence of the Central Government. Expressing deep concern, she wrote, “Even after so many days, there is continued silence from the government on this serious hunger strike, which is extremely sad and disappointing. After all, what else will the citizens of our country have to do to convey their legitimate demands and voice to the politicians in power? Ignoring the people of Ladakh is completely shocking and inhuman. I strongly request the Government of India to take immediate action.” Let us start a respectful dialogue with the protesters, understand the pain of the students and youth of our country and end this deadlock as soon as possible. It is our democratic right to raise our voice and demand our rights.”
